Study of the direction of hydrogen addition to dienones in the presence of pentacyanocobaltate

    Pentacyanocobaltate catalyzes the hydrogenation of 6-methyl-3, 5-heptadien-2-one (and of 3, 5-heptadien-2-one) at the 5, 6 double bond, and also the 1,4-addition of hydrogen to the diene system of the dienone. The C=C bond in the 3, 4 position hardly reacts.

    The cobalt complex accelerates the saturation of the activated C=C bond of 6-methyl-3-hepten-2-one. The isolated ethylene bond of 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one fails to hydrogenate.
