The radical polymerization of maleic anhydride (MA) was studied. The polymerization is accompanied by chain transfer on the monomer and initiator; the coefficients of transfer were determined.
The copolymerization of MA with vinyl acetate (VA) and other compounds was studied. In the case of dissolution of MA in the monomer, stable molecular complexes arise.
The copolymerization of MA proceeds only with the participation of these molecular complexes, which determines the strict chemical regularity and stereoregularity of the copolymer chain and its exact stoichiometric composition (1 mole: 1 mole).
The yield of the copolymer is determined by the number of mole equivalents of the copolymerizing substances present in solution.
