Addition of methylsulfenyl chloride to dimethylacrylic acid and its derivatives

Conclusions

  1. 1.

The addition of methylsulfenyl chloride to dimethylacrylic acid derivatives initially leads to the formation of the unstableα-chloro-β-methylmercapto derivatives, which are very easily isomerized to the stableβ-chloro-α-methylmercapto derivatives of isovaleric acid.

  2. 2.

The derivatives ofβ-chloro-α-methylmercaptoisovaleric acid, in contrast to the derivatives ofβ-chloro-β-methylmercaptopropionic acid, do not cleave hydrogen chloride when treated with triethylamine.
