A study was made of the effect of hydrogen pressure on the selectivity of the vanadium oxide-silica gel catalyst with respect to the hydrogenolysis of the individual bonds in the methylcyclopentane ring.
A comparison of the obtained results with the previously published data makes it possible to state that the previously established rule regarding the change in the selectivity of various catalysts can also be extended to vanadium oxide: the relative hydrogenolysis rates of the bonds in the methylcyclopentane ring between the tertiary and secondary atoms nearest to the methyl group, and of the bonds between the secondary atoms furthest away from the methyl group, increase with increase in the hydrogen pressure.
