Study of the catalytic dehydration of mixed isopentanols and accompanying transformations of the formed isopentenes

    In the presence of strongly isomerizing catalysts like aluminosilicate and borophosphate, the composition of the isopentenes formed in the dehydration of mixtures of primary isoamyl alcohols is close to the equilibrium composition. Consequently, the isomerization of the isopentenes goes at a rate that is either equal to or relatively greater than the dehydration rate of the alcohol.

    On calcium phosphate and aluminum oxide the isomerization of the formed isopentenes is slower than the dehydration of the alcohol, for which reason the composition of the formed isopentenes reflects the composition of the starting mixture of alcohols.
