Effect of hot deformation on carburizing of steel

Conclusions

  1. 1.

    Hot plastic deformation intensifies diffusion processes in steel.

  2. 2.

    With increasing degrees of deformation the relative depth of the diffusion zone increases during saturation of the steel with carbon.

  3. 3.

    Large and small deformations have different effects on the depth of the diffusion zone. Small deformations affect the depth of the diffusion zone to a lesser extent than deformations over 40%. In this case the depth of the diffusion zone is affected not only by “mechanical diffusion” but by other factors associated with the development of defects and the change in the thermodynamic activity of carbon.
