Nonequilibrium superconductivity in very thin, light-irradiated aluminum tunnel junctions

Abstract

We have measured theI-V characteristics of tunnel junctions made of crossed, nominally 50–60-Å-thick aluminum films. Despite some gap broadening, the thermalI–V characteristics are those of weak-coupled superconductors. Under light irradiation, the films behave like homogeneous superconductors with the quasiparticles and phonons in equilibrium thermal distributions at a temperature above the bath temperature. The films behave as though the phonons are localized in the films despite the phonon wavelengths being considerable longer than the film thickness.
