Long-time oxidation of iron at 1100‡C in air

Abstract

Long-time isothermal oxidation, 180 hr, was carried out on AREMA iron at 1100‡C. Fe samples, 3 mm in diameter, were completely oxidized. X-ray analysis, weight-gain measurements, and electron microanalysis were used as experimental techniques. The completely oxidized samples of the original cylindrical form, were compact, and solid. The scale contained cavities and cracks (∼30% of volume) and consisted of about 80% hematite and 20% magnetite, randomly dispersed.
