Summary

Boric acid has been identified as a major component of Alcian blue 8GX, comprising 40–50% by weight of commercial samples. Several methods are outlined whereby Alcian blue 8GX may be freed of boric acid. The simplest involves differential precipitation of Alcian blue 8GX from aqueous solution with acetone.
