Definition
Molecular computing is a novel approach to develop computing systems and devices alternative to conventional silicon-based computing using (biological) molecules.
Overview
Molecular computing research aims at developing computing systems and devices that are fully or partly composed of molecular materials. It typically refers to molecular devices or systems consisting of molecular substrates (mostly biomolecules, such as protein and DNA) for information processing.
Ultimate goals of molecular computing research are not to replace well-established semiconductor materials used for today’s computer systems. Molecular computer devices are generally slow, unstable, and hard to connect up together, compared to conventional semiconductor devices.
