Definition
Batik is a process for creating patterned textiles by applying wax in defined areas to form a dye resist, then subsequently dyeing the fabric. A textile created using this process is also referred to as a batik.
Background, Process, and Aesthetic Properties
There is no general agreement in the textile coloration field regarding where the practice of batik originated. Early examples of batik have been found in India, Central Asia, the Far East, and the Middle East [1]. The techniques and tools used to accomplish batik varied from region to region and still do. In many parts of the world batik is an important component of the cultural heritage and this is reflected in the often symbolic colors, motifs, and designs used in the traditional batiks.
