Definition
Automotive lighting in general includes all lighting functions installed on motor vehicles. While this includes rear and signaling devices, this chapter will focus only on front lighting systems. The main goal for automotive headlamps is to increase safety for drivers at night without glaring other traffic participants. For this reason, automotive manufacturers have constantly developed new headlamp technologies. Beginning with the historically and currently still relevant light sources for automotive front lighting systems such as tungsten halogen, HID, and LED light sources, different steps in the evolution of headlamp systems and their improvements are discussed in this paper. Going away from light sources, the historical evolution of intelligent headlamps and their...
