Definition

The MPI (Eysenck 1959) is a self-reported instrument intended for adult populations and designed to measure the two major personality dimensions of extraversion-introversion (E) and neuroticism (N) as they are defined in Eysenck’s dimensional theory. It has been used mainly in experimental, medical, and marketing research, personnel selection, and clinical assessment.

Introduction

The MPI was developed as a response to two factors which are at the origin of many personality measures: (a) social pressures to forecast personal adjustment and (b) assessment of new theoretical developments. The Maudsley Medical Questionnaire (MMQ; Eysenck 1947), the predecessor of the MPI, focused only on the first issue and was successful at differentiating neurotic patients from adjusted individuals.
