Early Life and Career
Kerry Jang was born on January 26, 1962, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His grandparents immigrated to Canada from Kwonghoi City, Toishan (a.k.a. Sunning) County, China, during the Qing Dynasty and landed in Victoria, BC, around the early 1900s. He earned his B.A. (Hons) in psychology from Simon Fraser University in 1985, and at this time, he also began his long-standing community service career as a volunteer recreation worker at a drop in center operated by the Canadian Mental Health Association. In this role he organized and took individuals recovering from mental illness on outings. In 1988 he earned his M.A. in psychology from the same institution under Prof. Charles B. Crawford in the then-emerging field of sociobiology. His M.A. thesis analyzed Canadian census data to test if the spacing (measured in years) between births of children in a family could be used as an index of the parental investment in each child.
