Interpersonal manipulativeness

Definition

Although there is no consensus on a definition of manipulativeness, most would likely agree that it involves a tendency to deliberately use interpersonal tactics to influence another person or persons to behave in a way that is in keeping with one’s own personal gain. In his Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R; Hare 2003), Robert Hare describes manipulation as conning and deceiving others for personal gain, whereas others have noted that interpersonal manipulation overlaps with both persuasion and coercion (see Kligman and Culver 1992, for a review and analysis of interpersonal manipulation).
