Synopsis

Having access to the genome sequence of any organism, including a plant species, enables rapid, robust, and unlimited investigations into biological processes and phenomena. Plant genome sequencing lags behind that of bacterial and mammalian sequencing progress due, in large part, to the size and repetitive nature of plant genomes. While some plant genomes are small with limited repetitive sequences, plants are frequently polyploid and transposon rich. A substantial number of plant species are also outcrossing and highly heterozygous. Thus, while standard sequencing methods can be used on plant DNA, special attention should be given to these genome properties and addressed through genetic manipulations to reduce the technical challenges in genome assembly.
