Special Issue: Seismic out-of-plane response of unreinforced masonry gables

This Special Issue will be part of an experimental campaign carried out within the scope of the ERIES (Engineering Research Infrastructures for European Synergies) transnational access programme. Three unreinforced masonry (URM) gables will be tested until full collapse in the out-of-plane direction under incremental dynamic excitation at EUCENTRE, Pavia, Italy. For each gable, different input excitations will be applied at the bottom and top of the gables to account for the interaction of the URM gables with (i) a rigid, (ii) a flexible roof, and (iii) a semi-rigid retrofitted roof diaphragm. The outcomes of the experimental campaign will serve as benchmarks to be used for the refinement and calibration of existing numerical modelling approaches, as well as the development of new tools. To promote such a calibration process, an international blind-prediction contest will be set up. Participants in this blind prediction competition will be invited to submit contributions to the proposed special issue. Thus, the main objectives of the special issue will be to (i) objectively compare the performance of currently used modelling strategies towards capturing the seismic out-of-plane response of unreinforced masonry gables and (ii) provide benchmarks for the improvement/development of existing/new modelling strategies to capture the same.
