Special Issue: Plastic Pollution in Aquatic Ecosystems
Plastic pollution is pervasive across ecosystems, but knowledge about its effects on ecosystems and biota is biased towards marine pollution by small plastic fractions. To advance our knowledge about plastic pollution, we are organizing a special issue in Hydrobiologia addressing plastic pollution on aquatic ecosystems, biota and processes. We especially welcome contributions based on empirical studies. Reviews will also be considered, but editors should be addressed before submission to assess interest.
This special issue welcomes studies on plastic pollution on any aquatic ecosystem, and especially stimulates contributions addressing macroplastics (in any ecosystem) and contributions from freshwaters (addressing any plastic size). Contributions from so far less studied regions, such as Africa and South America are particularly welcome. All contributions need to address the interaction between plastics and biota or plastic effects on ecosystems; contributions simply mapping or quantifying plastics in the environment will not be considered.
