Special Issue: Energy Conversion Reactions in Natural and Artificial Photosynthesis

Kenneth H. Sauer, professor emeritus of chemistry at UC Berkeley, passed away on 6 November 2022 at the age of 91. Ken was one of the major leaders in photosynthesis research and involved in educating several generations of scientists. Many people in the field have passed through his lab at some point in their careers or were associated with him in some way as alumni, collaborators, colleagues, and friends.

In honour of Ken and his research, Photosynthesis Research is pleased to put together a collection of articles related to Ken’s research interests. The coverage of this collection includes new experimental and theoretical approaches regarding the light and chemical conversion reactions in natural and artificial photosynthesis, and their evolution. This includes light harvesting and charge separation processes, electron and proton transfer; as well as catalytic reactions in photosystem II and photosystem I, the cytochrome b6f complex, ATPase, CO2 fixation, and alternative utilization of the reducing power created by the light reactions.
