Extinction Events in Earth History

Abstract

At the very end of Permian time, all continents, as we know them today, were dry land, with the possible exception of a minor part of China. At and around the Permian-Triassic boundary, some major fossil groups (on the class and order level) became extinct; others passed from one system to the other with minor or major modifications; yet others sailed through with just ordinary, expectable, evolutionary changes. The evidence points toward the occurrence of environmental changes at and before the Permian-Triassic boundary, spread out over several million years, that affected different life forms, from Foraminifera to tetrapods and plants, in a variety of ways. A few went out with a whimper, still fewer with a bang. Some became extinct shortly before the beginning of the Triassic, some shortly after. Others suffered setbacks, but came through virtually intact. The paleontological record does not support the postulate of a catastrophic event that led to simultaneous extinctions of a significant portion of Paleozoic life forms. Rather, evolutionary changes were brought about by processes acting over several millions of years. Causative factors may have included worldwide regression of the sea, changes in ocean salinity, global temperature changes, changing supplies of nutrients, and intrinsic biologic modifications.
