Inleiding
Patiënten met de ziekte van Parkinson krijgen doorgaans lang voor de diagnose gesteld wordt, te kampen met een aantal niet-motorische symptomen, zoals een verminderde reukzin, obstipatie, urges, periodes waarin zij zich wat down voelen, moeilijkheden met planning en andere executieve functies. De klinische diagnose wordt echter veelal pas gesteld wanneer motorische symptomen optreden, met bradykinesie (hypokinesie, akinesie) als kernsymptoom, aangevuld door minstens één van volgende symptomen: rigiditeit, posturale instabiliteit en tremor. Bijkomende eigenschappen van de idiopathische vorm van de ziekte van Parkinson zijn: een unilateraal begin van de klachten, een geleidelijk progressief verloop en een positieve reactie op het toedienen van levodopa.
