Samenvatting

Colitis ulcerosa (cu) is een chronische ontsteking van het slijmvlies van het colon (dikke darm). Het is een continue oppervlakkige ontsteking van het slijmvlies van de dikke darm, waarbij het rectum vrijwel altijd is ontstoken (proctitis). cu begint in het rectum (endeldarm) en kan zich dan uitbreiden over de hele dikke darm. Meestal (in 75 procent van de gevallen) raakt alleen het linkercolondeel betrokken, in veel gevallen ook blijft de ontsteking beperkt tot het rectum (proctitis). De ziekte kan op iedere leeftijd voorkomen, maar wordt het meest gezien tussen het 15e en 40e levensjaar.
