Zusammenfassung
Die Nanomedizin wird zu einer tragenden Säule der Zukunftsmedizin. Künstliche, autonome DNA-Bots in Molekulargröße können Medikamente im Gefäßsystem und anderen Geweben transportieren und gezielt an Krankheitsherden absetzen, wo sie dann ihre Wirkung entfalten. Ein Schwerpunkt-Einsatz wird die Krebsbekämpfung sein. Aber auch Diagnosen sollen in der entstehenden Molekulardiagnostik zunehmend exakt auf das Individuum zugeschnitten werden. Softwareunterstütztes Design neuer, in der Natur nicht vorkommender Proteine nimmt Fahrt auf. Künstliche Proteine mit neuen chemischen und physikalischen Eigenschaften entstehen. Langfristig können sie zu Bestandteilen unserer Biologie werden und unsere Evolution verändern. Die Unterscheidbarkeit von künstlich und natürlich wird dabei vollkommen verschwimmen. Am Horizont zeichnet sich bereits die vollständige Simulation unserer Biologie und ihr Umbau mit der Hilfe künstlicher Intelligenz und globaler Netze ab. Immer exaktere Simulationen bis auf die molekulare Ebene können zu einem Rückgrat medizinischer Strategien werden.
