Zusammenfassung

Die BN ist erst in den 80er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts als eigenständiges Krankheitsbild beschrieben und definiert worden (Russell 1979). Vorher war diese Störung der Magersucht zugeordnet oder als unspezifische Essstörung verstanden worden. 1980 wurde die BN in das Diagnoseschema DSM-III aufgenommen. Die Hauptsymptomatik besteht aus Essanfällen, die von kompensatorischen Verhaltensweisen gefolgt werden. Die Patientinnen befürchten, durch die Essanfälle an Gewicht zuzunehmen und setzen deshalb selbstinduziertes Erbrechen und andere gewichtsreduzierende Maßnahmen ein. Dazu gehören häufige Diäten, Fasten, Vermeidung hochkalorischer Lebensmittel, Missbrauch von Medikamenten (Laxanzien, Diuretika, Appetitzügler, Schilddrüsenhormone) und exzessive sportliche Betätigung.
