Abstract

This chapter presents two ideas for your consideration. The first is that perceiving the world through a device is different to perceiving it directly and, the second is that interacting with the world through a device is different to interacting with it directly.

These ideas may seem straightforward, but I am presenting them here in order to establish a common understanding of fundamental principles underlying our use of technology here and now, before broaching the more complex ideas presented in this book; the design of machines specifically for human use.

Now, you may be wondering why I am presenting these ideas for your consideration, and trying to explain the rationale so that we stand on equal footing, rather than simply telling you to accept these ideas as fact. The simple answer is that this just isn’t that kind of book.
