Abstract

Duplex sonography is helpful for the differential diagnosis of space occupying lesions of the adrenal gland and sympathic chain. In the neonatal period color Doppler can differentiate between adrenal hemorrhage which shows no internal vessels and congenital neuroblastoma which is characterized by internal vascularity. In adrenal cysts no vessels can be displayed. Tumors of the adrenal gland and sympathic chain, such as neuroblastoma, ganglioneuroma and phaeochromozytoma, displace adjacent abdominal organs. They show irregular internal vessels. Color Doppler helps to differentiate between displacement and infiltration of adjacent arteries and veins.
