Abstract

In the premenopausal woman, the main site of estrogen production is the ovaries, and with every menstrual cycle, rising follicle stimulating hormone levels induce estrogen biosynthesis from granulosa cells of the developing follicles [80]. Estrogens produced from the ovaries act in an endocrine fashion to modulate gonadotrophin secretion, growth of the uterine lining, as well as maintain normal function of a wide range of tissues, including the breast, bone and brain.
