Age-Related Cognitive Deficits and Neurotransmitters

The Role of Catecholamine Mechanisms in Prefrontal Cortical Cognitive Decline

  • Chapter
Cerebral Cortex

Part of the book series: Cerebral Cortex ((CECO,volume 14))

Abstract

How do changes in neurotransmitters over the life span alter higher cortical function? More specifically, how might degeneration of monoamine systems projecting to cortex from brainstream contirbute to age-related cognitive decline? These important quetions have often been asked using nonhuman primate models, as monkeys have highly developed neocortices and show age-related changes comparable to those observed in humans. Aged monkeys and humans exhibit similar patterns of cognitive deficits, and similar neuropathological changes with advancing age. The aged monkey model has been especially important for examining age-related changes that cannot be observed reliably or ethically in humans.
