Abstract

As the title of this book suggests, the chapters it contains deal with the relationship between aggressive and violent play and spectator demand. This is not the first book to examine this issue, as the topic of violence in sports has been the subject of psychologists, sociologist, and other social scholars who are interested in explaining the behavioral motivations of players who engage in aggressive and violent play in contests or who are interested in understanding the behavior of consumers who watch these aggressive and violent games. For instance, sport psychologists are concerned with the individual traits that motivate violent behavior in sport, under the assumption that such violence can be mitigated with appropriate behavior-modification strategies (Abrams 2010).
