Stokes Imaging of the Accretion Region in Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

Abstract

Modelling of polarized cyclotron emission from magnetic cataclysmic variables has been a pivotal technique for determining the structure and location of the accretion zones on the white dwarf. Stokes imaging of Potter et al. [8] is the first objective and analytical technique that robustly models the cyclotron emission and maps the accretion zones.

Polarisation modelling is discussed, followed by a summary of the Stokes imaging technique. We demonstrate this technique on new polarimetric observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable V834 Cen.
