Abstract
Based on a sediment budget of the Alpenrhein valley and Lake Constance for the Late Glacial and the Holocene, a concept of largescale sediment budgets for the entire drainage basin of the Rhine River is presented. In particular the following approaches are recommended: (1) Study of sediment volumes in representative quasi-closed subsystems or quantification of losses, (2) upscaling by defining uniform subcatchments using GIS, (3) tracing individual events in floodplain sediments which can be correlated throughout large parts of the river system to secure stratigraphic correlations, and (4) finally calculation of a simplified total budget for the entire system (e.g. Holocene) using approaches (1) to (3). Despite many uncertainties in establishing sediment budgets for open systems, sediment budgets provide the only “hard” data to validate computer simulations of sediment fluxes in the past.
