Abstract
Vitamin A. Vitamin A is essential for proper growth and development of cells and tissues. As a ligand for retinoic acid receptors (RAR, RXR) differentiation of cells and integrity of tissues is controlled.
Respiratory tract. Vitamin A is of special importance for the respiratory epithelium and the lung. During moderate vitamin A-deficiency the incidence of respiratory tract infections increases and, vice versa, moderate vitamin A supplementation has a beneficial effect on respiratory tract infections.
